This study focuses on the issue of pre-sarcopenia, a condition where older adults experience a decline in muscle mass or muscle strength. This is a common issue, affecting around 10-20% of the aging population. The study aims to investigate the potential benefits of squat exercises in improving pre-sarcopenia. The idea is that early intervention with resistance exercises, like squats, could increase muscle mass, enhance physical performance, and prevent the progression to a more severe condition called sarcopenia. This research is important as it could help improve the quality of life for older adults and offer a solution to this common health issue. During the study, participants will engage in squat exercises. The effects of these exercises will be measured in several ways. Physical performance will be assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), which includes a balance test, a gait speed test, and a chair stand test. Scores range from 0 to 12, with higher scores indicating better physical performance. Additionally, body composition will be evaluated using bioelectrical impedance analysis (InBody), which measures skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, and body fat percentage. The study expects that after the squat exercise intervention, older adults will show significant improvements in these areas, thereby alleviating pre-sarcopenia.

Criteria

4 inclusion criteria required to participate
Able to read, have clear consciousness, and communicate in Mandarin

Older adults aged 65 years and above who meet at least one criterion of pre-sarcopenia

Residents of Hualien

Willing to participate in this study

3 exclusion criteria prevent from participating
Individuals with disability

Individuals with injuries of the knee, hip, or lumbar spine that prevent participation in squat exercise

Individuals with psychiatric disorders or other conditions affecting cognitive function

Treatment Groups
Study Objectives

2 intervention groups are designated in this study

This study does not include a placebo group 

Treatment Groups

Group I

Experimental
Participants in this group will engage in a 12-week squat exercise program, aimed at improving lower-body strength and physical performance. Assessments will be done at the start, mid-point, and end of the program.

Group II

No Intervention
Participants in this group do not receive any specific resistance training. They continue with their normal daily activities.
