Study start date: September 4, 2025
Actual date on which the first participant was enrolled.Adolescence is a time of heightened emotions and often the period when mental health disorders like depression or anxiety first appear. Globally, 15% of adolescents experience a mental health disorder. However, mental health isn't just about disorders; it's also about overall well-being that helps individuals handle stress, recognize their abilities, and participate in society. This study focuses on Ecuadorian adolescents aged 14-19, aiming to evaluate their mental health, identify and reduce risks of mental health disorders, and create comprehensive interventions to boost their emotional wellbeing. The study combines cross-sectional and longitudinal methods, recruiting adolescents from Quito, Ecuador through a simple random sampling technique. While the minimum sample size is 385, the study aims for around 1000 participants to increase precision. The main outcome measure is mental health, assessed using social determinants of health and lifestyle medicine factors. The study's primary goal is to comprehensively evaluate adolescents' mental health in relation to the six pillars of lifestyle medicine. The results will help design multidisciplinary strategies to prevent and mitigate mental health issues in adolescents, and may inform public health authorities in evaluating or modifying current policies.
