DISCOVERGlycaemic States Impact on ICU Outcomes
This study aims to observe the impact of chronic high blood sugar levels on short and long-term outcomes in intensive care patients, including mortality and organ injury, and to examine the prevalence of different blood sugar conditions among these patients.

Study start date: May 1, 2024
Actual date on which the first participant was enrolled. This study focuses on understanding how diabetes and prediabetes affect patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Diabetes is common among ICU patients, and it can lead to serious issues such as infections, heart problems, and even death. However, not all patients with blood sugar issues are identified because the current system mainly checks if they've been prescribed glucose-controlling medications. This means some cases of undiagnosed or poorly controlled diabetes and prediabetes might be missed. The study aims to discover the real number of ICU patients with various blood sugar conditions and how these conditions impact their health in the short and long term. This is crucial for providing better care to these patients during their ICU stay and after discharge. Patients in this study will not receive a new treatment. Instead, the researchers will use blood tests to measure a marker called glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), which shows average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. This measurement is used alongside other health indicators to assess the patients' risk of complications and organ damage. The study will look at how chronic high blood sugar affects organ injury, mortality rates in the ICU, and the patients' health a year after their ICU stay. By identifying the prevalence and effects of different blood sugar levels, the study aims to improve the understanding of diabetes management in critically ill patients.
