This study explores the relationship between heavy metal exposure and lung health in young adults who use electronic cigarettes. The goal is to identify and measure the concentration of heavy metals present in the saliva of e-cigarette users and to observe any changes in lung function before and after vaping. Researchers are particularly interested in understanding how the intensity of vaping might affect heavy metal levels in users. This research is important as it could provide insights into potential health risks associated with e-cigarette use, which is a growing concern among young adults. Participants in this study use their own electronic cigarette devices for up to 30 minutes, choosing how much they want to vape. During this time, researchers collect saliva samples to measure heavy metal levels and conduct tests to assess lung function. Participants also fill out questionnaires to provide additional information. This observational study does not involve any experimental treatments, but it aims to gather valuable data on the potential health impacts of vaping, focusing on heavy metal exposure and respiratory health.

Protocol

This section provides details of the study plan, including how the study is designed and what the study is measuring.
Design Details

100 patients to be enrolled

Total number of participants that the clinical trial aims to recruit.

Case-only

These studies focus only on individuals who have a specific disease. Researchers examine patterns—often genetic or environmental—to uncover what might be linked to the condition.

Eligibility

Researchers look for people who fit a certain description, called eligibility criteria: person's general health condition or prior treatments.
Criteria

Any sex

Biological sex of participants that are eligible to enroll.

From 18 to 29 Years

Range of ages for which participants are eligible to join.

Healthy volunteers allowed

If individuals who are healthy and do not have the condition being studied can participate.

Criteria

6 inclusion criteria required to participate
Aged 18-29 years

Established electronic cigarette (EC) user (participant uses ECs on a daily/weekly basis [used on ≥ 5 days in past 30-days] for the past 3 months)

Willing to abstain from nicotine for at least 12 hours before the laboratory visit

Willing to not eat food or drink water/beverages for at least 30 minutes before the laboratory visit [required for salivary collection]

Show More Criteria

8 exclusion criteria prevent from participating
Recently COVID-19+ (defined as a positive test in the past 30 days) or a recent COVID-19 hospitalization (within the past 6 months)

Attempting to quit the use of ECs

Past 30-day use of other tobacco products (e.g., combustible cigarettes)

Is pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant and/or breastfeeding [will be verified using a urine pregnancy test]
