Paraesophageal hernias are a type of hernia where a part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm alongside the esophagus. This condition can lead to uncomfortable and potentially serious symptoms like acid reflux, pain in the chest, nausea, and in severe cases, it can cause blockages or twisting of the stomach. Repairing this type of hernia often results in the hernia coming back, with more than half of the cases experiencing a recurrence. This study is important because it explores whether removing the hernia sac during surgery can reduce the tension on the diaphragm, potentially lowering the recurrence rate and improving the quality of life for patients. In this observational study, researchers look at patients undergoing surgery for paraesophageal hernia to see if removing the hernia sac affects the tension in the diaphragm muscle, which might help prevent the hernia from coming back. Participants in this study do not receive any new treatments or medications; instead, the study observes the outcomes of the surgery performed in this manner. The main focus is on measuring the tension in the diaphragm and observing any changes in hernia recurrence rates. By gathering this data, the study aims to find a way to improve surgical outcomes and reduce the need for additional surgeries.

Protocol

This section provides details of the study plan, including how the study is designed and what the study is measuring.
Design Details

42 patients to be enrolled

Total number of participants that the clinical trial aims to recruit.

Case-only

These studies focus only on individuals who have a specific disease. Researchers examine patterns—often genetic or environmental—to uncover what might be linked to the condition.

Eligibility

Researchers look for people who fit a certain description, called eligibility criteria: person's general health condition or prior treatments.
