Summary
Study start date: August 1, 2025
Actual date on which the first participant was enrolled.Fixed braces used in orthodontic treatment can make it difficult to keep teeth clean, leading to plaque buildup and gum problems like gingivitis. While brushing and flossing help, they might not be enough, so mouthwashes can be a useful addition. This study focuses on comparing two types of mouthwash, Chlorhexidine (CHX) and Listerine, to see which one better improves gum health for people with braces. CHX is known for its strong effect against germs but can cause side effects like tooth staining and taste changes. Listerine, on the other hand, has fewer side effects and is easily available. This research could help find a more comfortable and effective mouthwash option for those with braces. In this study, 60 participants aged 13 to 25, undergoing orthodontic treatment, are divided into two groups to use either CHX or Listerine mouthwash for four weeks. The study is double-blind, meaning neither the participants nor the researchers know which mouthwash is being used to ensure unbiased results. Participants use the mouthwash provided in identical bottles, and their gum health is checked at the start, after two weeks, and at the end of the study. The main focus is on changes in plaque and gum health, checked by trained professionals. The study looks to see if Listerine can be as effective as CHX without the unwanted side effects, providing a safer option for those needing long-term use during their orthodontic treatment.
