This study aims to understand how the brain maintains memory, especially in healthy older adults. The research focuses on the brain's activity during memory tasks and how it changes when new information is introduced. Participants will engage in a computer-based task that helps them learn sequences over several days until their performance levels off. This study is important because it could reveal how memory works in the aging brain and potentially identify ways to support memory retention in older adults. Participants will perform the computer task at home daily and will visit the lab twice. During these visits, they will complete questionnaires, undergo neuropsychological tests, and have two brain scans using EEG and MRI technology. These scans will help researchers see how the brain's blood flow and electrical activity change with memory tasks. The study also evaluates participants' cognitive abilities and other factors that might affect learning and memory. The main outcomes measured will include changes in brain activity patterns and the precision of their task performance. This research could help improve our understanding of memory processes and support better cognitive health in aging.

Protocol

This section provides details of the study plan, including how the study is designed and what the study is measuring.
Design Details

40 patients to be enrolled

Total number of participants that the clinical trial aims to recruit.

Other

Some studies use unique or mixed approaches that don't fit standard categories. These may include innovative observational methods or studies tailored to specific research questions.

Eligibility

Researchers look for people who fit a certain description, called eligibility criteria: person's general health condition or prior treatments.
Criteria

Any sex

Biological sex of participants that are eligible to enroll.

Over 18 Years

Range of ages for which participants are eligible to join.

Healthy volunteers allowed

If individuals who are healthy and do not have the condition being studied can participate.

Criteria

3 inclusion criteria required to participate
Age 18 years or older (80 of the final sample will be >= 60years of age)

Ability to perform a computer task requiring responding to visual cues and typing on a standard computer keyboard with both index and middle fingers for 30 minutes daily

Cognitively unimpaired, ambiguous, or mildly impaired cognitive function, defined as a score of >= 18 in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA)

3 exclusion criteria prevent from participating
Neuromuscular disorders that affect fine motor control of the hands

Medication use at the time of study that may interfere with learning, including but not limited to carbamazepine, flunarizine, sulpiride, rivastigmine, and dextromethorphan

Dementia defined as a score of < 18 in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA)
