This study focuses on exploring how school-based physical education (PE) can enhance physical fitness, emotional skills, and overall well-being among young adolescents in Bhutan. Rapid social changes in Bhutan have led to lifestyle shifts among youth, including more sedentary behavior and mental health challenges. This research is particularly important as Bhutanese schools currently allocate limited time and resources to PE. The study aims to determine whether an enhanced PE program can provide greater benefits compared to the standard PE curriculum or no PE at all. This could lead to improvements in how physical education is integrated into school systems in Bhutan, potentially influencing national education policies and enhancing the well-being of students. The study will be conducted in two urban public schools in Bhutan, using a method called a randomized controlled trial. One school will implement an enhanced PE program, offering two 90-minute sessions each week for five months, while the other will follow the standard PE curriculum. A third school, without any PE classes, will serve as a control group. The enhanced PE program will not only focus on physical exercises but also include activities that build emotional skills like self-awareness and empathy. Researchers will collect data through questionnaires filled out by students and their parents, as well as physical assessments conducted by PE teachers. This will help evaluate improvements in physical fitness, emotional skills, and well-being before and after the program. The results could provide valuable insights into the benefits of PE, not only for Bhutan but also globally.

Services Research Study

These studies look at how healthcare is delivered, managed, and organized. They aim to improve care quality, patient experience, and access to treatment.

Eligibility

Researchers look for people who fit a certain description, called eligibility criteria: person's general health condition or prior treatments.
Criteria

Range of ages for which participants are eligible to join.

Healthy volunteers allowed

If individuals who are healthy and do not have the condition being studied can participate.

Criteria

4 inclusion criteria required to participate
Enrolment in participating schools: Students must be enrolled in upper primary school classes (grades 7 and 8) in one of the three participating school.

Regular school attendance: Students must attend school regularly to ensure consistent exposure to the intervention (min 80% of the courses).

This study does not include a placebo group

Treatment Groups

Group I

Experimental
The "Enhanced physical education" arm is based on the Health and Physical Education Curriculum Framework developed by the Bhutanese Ministry of Education and well-document in the 2022 edition, www.education.gov.bt. The enhanced PE group will receive two 90-minute sessions weekly for 5 months. The enhanced PE program incorporate both PE with socio-emotional competencies, such as self-regulation, self- and social-awareness, empathy-building exercises, and cooperation activities.

Group II

Active Comparator
Health and Physical Education (HPE) standard curriculum is mainly a physical education class limited to a single weekly hour and is highly dependent on the motivation of individual teachers and schools.
