Summary
Study start date: May 10, 2024
Actual date on which the first participant was enrolled. This study focuses on helping adults in rural areas of Bangladesh quit using tobacco through a counseling service called the 5A-5R approach. Tobacco use is a major health risk and is especially prevalent in Bangladesh, contributing to diseases like heart disease and cancer. The 5A-5R approach involves a series of steps to encourage people to stop using tobacco. This study is important because it explores whether adding phone support, like calls and text messages, can make this counseling more effective in getting people to quit or reduce their tobacco use. The goal is to provide better support for tobacco users in rural healthcare settings, potentially setting an example for similar efforts globally. Participants in this study will be adults who currently use tobacco and live in specific rural areas. Some will receive the standard 5A-5R counseling, while others will also get additional support via phone calls and texts. The study will compare these groups to a control group that receives no special counseling to see which method is most effective. The focus is on whether these interventions can lead to a higher rate of quitting tobacco. Community health workers will support the participants by visiting them at home and inviting them to participate in counseling sessions. The study will track how well each approach works in helping people quit tobacco, aiming to find the best method to support tobacco cessation efforts.
