Summary
Study start date: January 14, 2022
Actual date on which the first participant was enrolled. This study focuses on understanding how osteocalcin, a protein linked to bone health, changes in a fluid around the gums during dental procedures in people with gum disease. Osteocalcin is present in various body fluids and its levels can hint at how bones are forming and breaking down. This research is important for patients with periodontal (gum) issues who need braces because their bone and gum health impact how teeth move when braces are applied. By investigating the osteocalcin levels, the study aims to improve understanding of bone activity in these patients, which could lead to better dental care and treatment outcomes. Participants in this study will undergo an analysis of the fluid around their gums, known as gingival crevicular fluid, during a specific dental procedure called canine retraction. This procedure is part of the orthodontic treatment where teeth are moved into new positions. Researchers will measure the osteocalcin levels in this fluid. The study does not involve taking medication or undergoing any invasive procedures, but it does involve regular collection of the gum fluid to monitor osteocalcin levels. Monitoring these levels helps in understanding the impact of dental treatments on bone activity, potentially leading to improved orthodontic techniques for those with compromised gum health.
