This study focuses on Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) among adults in the Pacific Islands, specifically in Samoa. The goal is to understand the frequency, causes, treatment, and results of AKI in this region. Adults over 18 years old admitted to Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital with a diagnosis of AKI and a serum creatinine level of more than 200 micromol/L are included. The study also considers patients with underlying chronic kidney disease who experience an AKI episode during the study period. This research is important as it aims to improve the understanding and management of AKI in low-resource settings like Samoa. During the study, participants' medical records are reviewed to collect information about their demographic details, admission information, presenting symptoms, and AKI diagnosis based on the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. The study also looks at the factors contributing to AKI development, treatment methods used, and patient outcomes. The data collected includes details about non-dialytic treatments, dialysis (if received), and the patient's status at the end of the study. The results of this study could help improve the care and outcomes for patients with AKI in similar low-resource settings.

Design Details

114 patients to be enrolled

Total number of participants that the clinical trial aims to recruit.

Cohort

These studies follow a group of individuals with common characteristics (such as a condition or birth year) over a specific period to study health outcomes or exposures.

Eligibility

Researchers look for people who fit a certain description, called eligibility criteria: person's general health condition or prior treatments.
Conditions
Criteria

Any sex

Biological sex of participants that are eligible to enroll.

Over 18 Years

Range of ages for which participants are eligible to join.

Criteria

3 inclusion criteria required to participate
adults (>18 years) admitted to general wards of Tupua Tamasese Meaole (TTM) Hospital with a diagnosis of AKI between the 1st December 2019 and the 31st of May 2020

serum creatinine level of >200 micromol/L

compliance with the current Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria for AKI diagnosis

3 exclusion criteria prevent from participating
patients on chronic haemodialysis

patients with underlying chronic kidney disease with no evidence of AKI

patients for whom it was not possible to ascertain a diagnosis (i.e., patients with one elevated serum creatinine result and no subsequent follow-up haematology)
