This study aims to understand how a virus like SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, enters the body through tissues in the nose and throat. Researchers are focusing on two proteins, ACE2 and TMPRSS2, which might play a role in this process. These proteins could be found in the tonsils and adenoids, which might be important for how the virus affects people. The study is particularly interested in why children, who usually get severe symptoms from other respiratory viruses, tend to have milder cases of COVID-19 compared to adults. By examining the levels of these proteins in both children and adults, the study hopes to uncover differences that could explain these varied responses to the virus. Participants in the study will have their tonsil and adenoid tissues examined to measure the levels of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 proteins. This is done using a method called immunofluorescence, which helps highlight these proteins in the tissues. The main goal is to see how much of these proteins are present and compare the findings between children and adults. This research could help improve understanding of COVID-19 transmission and severity, potentially leading to better prevention and treatment strategies in the future.

Cohort

These studies follow a group of individuals with common characteristics (such as a condition or birth year) over a specific period to study health outcomes or exposures.

Eligibility

Researchers look for people who fit a certain description, called eligibility criteria: person's general health condition or prior treatments.
