This study focuses on AIDS patients who experience anemia, a condition where the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells. This anemia can be caused by the disease itself or by a medication used to treat AIDS, called zidovudine (AZT). The goal of the study is to understand the safety and effectiveness of a drug called erythropoietin, or r-HuEPO, in managing this anemia. The potential outcomes of this study could provide a new treatment option for AIDS patients suffering from anemia, improving their quality of life. During the study, participants receive either r-HuEPO or a placebo, a substance that has no therapeutic effect. Neither the participants nor the researchers know who receives which, ensuring the results are unbiased. The study measures the safety and effectiveness of r-HuEPO by evaluating changes in the participants' red blood cell count and any side effects that may occur. The results of this study could help determine if r-HuEPO is a safe and effective treatment for anemia in AIDS patients.

Protocol

This section provides details of the study plan, including how the study is designed and what the study is measuring.

Treatment Study

These studies test new ways to treat a disease, condition, or health issue. The goal is to see if a new drug, therapy, or approach works better or has fewer side effects than existing options.

Eligibility

Researchers look for people who fit a certain description, called eligibility criteria: person's general health condition or prior treatments.
