This study focuses on Alaska Natives who struggle with alcohol dependence. It aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a medication called naltrexone (Revia) in reducing the risk of relapse. The study also explores whether combining naltrexone with another medication, sertraline (Zoloft), leads to better abstinence rates than using naltrexone alone. This research is important as it could potentially improve treatment options for alcohol dependence within the Alaska Native community. Participants in this 16-week outpatient study will receive either naltrexone or a combination of naltrexone and sertraline. Criteria

4 inclusion criteria required to participate
Alaska Native having biological Alaska Native ancestry
Meets criteria for alcohol dependence
Prior to entering the study must be abstinent between 3 and 14 days and have a withdrawal assessment
Stable residence to ensure that subjects can be located during the study
11 exclusion criteria prevent from participating
Current use of Type 1C antiarrhythmics propafenone and flecainide
Current use of disulfiram
Currently meets criteria for abuse or dependence on substances other than alcohol or nicotine
Females who are pregnant, nursing, or not using a reliable method of birth control
