VLDLLarge Lipid Database for Personalized Treatment of Abnormal Blood Lipids

The Very Large Database of Lipids (VLDL) study focuses on gathering and examining detailed lipid data from a large population. The goal is to generate new insights that could range from understanding the agreement between commonly used lipid measures to characterizing rare or extreme disorders of lipid metabolism. This could potentially lead to more personalized treatment for people with abnormal blood lipids. The study includes adults and children who were referred for a Vertical Auto Profile (VAP) test, with most participants coming from outpatient primary care clinics in the U.S. The VAP test used in this study directly measures the cholesterol levels of various lipoproteins and their subfractions, while triglycerides are measured using the Abbott ARCHITECT C-8000 system. The study uses only de-identified data, meaning all personal information is removed before the data reaches the investigators. The data is housed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and maintained by Drs. Jones and Martin. The current database includes over 5 million patients whose samples were collected between October 2015 and June 2019. The primary outcome of the study is to measure low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in milligrams per deciliter.
